Tuesday March 8th: At approx. 23:30 hrs Cuba Fire and Friendship Fire were toned to a reported structure fire. Reported flames showing as dispatch then alerted us it to be a trailer fire. Cuba 1st. Lieutenant was first on location and immediately reported condition red fully involved trailer fire and started to set up a water supply due to rural location of the fire. Upon closer investigation it was only the two car garage that was fully involved with the exposure of the house only approx. 10' away from the garage. Mother nature(the wind) played a HUGE factor in the fire not spreading to the house. The direction of the wind kept most of the heat, and smoke away from the trailer. Cuba 1 was first on location and immediately made a water curtain with a 2-1/2 between the trailer and garage and a 1-3/4" line was put at the front of the garage to extinguish the flames and protect the vehicle in the driveway. The vehicle, and side of the trailer sustained minor heat damage. Cuba 3 was the next vehicle on location who supplied water to Cuba 1. Friendship 2 was on scene and used a 1-3/4" line to extinguish the garage as well. Clarksville, Cuba, Friendship, Bolivar, Richburg, Portville, New Hudson were all dispatched for there tankers due to the remote location of the incident. The fire was under control in about 20 minutes.

JANUARY 2009 CALLS:
Monday Jan. 26th: 12:12pm Cuba Fire was toned to a Working Structure Fire with persons trapped. First Officer on Scene was 2nd Lieutenant Kupiec who reported condition red with people trapped. Upon further investigation Lt. Kupiec deteremined that everyone was in deed out of the structure and accounted for. At this time all Units in bound to the scene were notified that everyone was out of the structure. Cuba 501(R. Snyder) assumed command and started toning for tankers as he knew water sources were going to be a tough task with temps. only in the low teens. Cuba 3 Was first on location and quickly stretched a handline to the front of the structure and one to the side of the structure to try and keep the fire from spreading. Cuba 1 was on scene and they stretched lines to the front and side of the structure as well. Cuba 7 set there pond next to Cuba 1 and to the side of Cuba 3. This allowed both pumpers to draft out of the pond to supply all four handlines that were off including a 2-1/2 portable deluge gun that was set up. At this time we had tankers coming and dumping water into the pond to keep the supply of water up! Just down the road was a Dry Hydrant attempts were made to fill from this location put the Dry Hydrant became a frozen hydrant with the amount of bitter cold weather this region has had over the last few months. Two water fill stations were quickly established one in the town of friendship by arrow mart and the other at Chamberlain Park in Cuba. Each Tanker Had to travel roughly 10 miles round trip for each load of water. District one Fast Team from belfast was called into the scene as well. Cuba 9 was called for but due to mechanical problems was delayed in its intial response time Houghton 9 was called in but Cuba 9 was able to respond and Houghton 9 was Cancelled. Cuba 9 was set up at the front of the house and used to drowned out the remaining fire on the second floor as the roof of the structure had collapsed. Unfortunately due to the location and elevation of the house Cuba 9's 75' aerial was not enough and we later brought in Houghton 9's 100' aerial to better reach the structure. Clarksvilleİ was set up to supply Cuba 9 and then later was also used to supply Houghtonì a pond was set up near clarksvilleİ and the Master Stream to provide them with there own supply of water. The fire investiagtors were on scene and did there investigation and deemed the fire to be in the origin of the wood stove. After the fire investigators did there job we were in "Mop Up Stage" of the fire. This is when Disaster Struck. We had several different crews working on the first floor getting hot spots put out. A Crew was on the stairs that went to the second story to get a hot spot on the front wall of the house and this is when the ceiling/floor collapsed and trapped four fireman. 3 of the fireman were able to get out on there own however FF Jones from the Cuba Department was under alot of debrie. Mayday was called over the radio, Air Horns were set up three times, and a PAR (Personell Accountability Report) was called for. and the fast team was put into action. Once everyone was accounted for EMT's and Firefighters pitched in and helped get the injured firemen into the ambulance. FF Kupiec was the officer in charge at the front side of the building were the collapsed happened. He was standing on the front porch when the collapsed occured. When the collapsed occured it pushed smoke and other toxic fumes and heat out the front door into his path. Once FF Jones was being taking care and FF Kupiec new that everyone was out of the building he said he should go to be checked out and they took him by ambulance and the Olean General flew him out by mercy flight to ECMC where he is currently being treated for smoke inhalation and inhalation burns to his airways. Click here for updates.. Also let be known that the Amity Rescue Squad and the Allegany Ambulance Squad was on scene and doing REHAB operations for interior personell.
This goes to show that even during your "MOP UP" stages of the fire your Fast Team is still a vital part of the on scene operations.
